Hemp Milk
22 August is World Plant Milk Day. There are many benefits of making your own plant milk and you can read more about these on my blog here.
Hemp milk has quite an earthy flavour. I've added flavours to sweeten it but you can experiment with these (e.g. try cinnamon or cacao powder), or omit them if preferred. Enjoy the milk on its own, over cereal/fruit, or in a smoothie.
If you're serious about making plant milk, it's well worth investing in a nut milk bag. Muslin fabric works too.
Make sure you use whole hemp seeds in this recipe. Rather than throwing away the hemp remnants, try making a bath soak or skin exfoliant by following the instructions below.
I’ve based the recipe on the size of a standard Nutribullet processor, for ease, and it makes about 400ml of milk. However, it's easily doubled. It will keep for about three days in the fridge.
If you enjoyed making hemp milk, try out my recipes for oat milk and flaxseed milk.

Ingredients
- 400ml water
- 75g organic, whole hemp seeds
- 4 medjool dates
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons orange zest
Equipment
- Food processor (I use a Nutribullet)
- Bowl
- Nut milk bag (or a piece of muslin fabric and a large elastic band)
- Food safe gloves
- Bottle/jug
Method
1. Place all the ingredients in the food processor and blitz for about 2 minutes until blended together.
2. Pour the mixture through the nut bag into a large bowl, or through muslin suspended (using an elastic band) over a large bowl. With gloves on, press the nut bag or muslin to extract the final milk - the remnants should be fairly dry by the time you've extracted all the milk. Discard the mixture remaining in the nut bag (or keep it to make a bath soak - see below).
3. Pour the milk into a bottle or jug.
4. Tie the dry hemp remnants into a piece of muslin (or old sock/tights) and combine with oats/the oat remnants from making oat milk, to make a skin-soothing bath soak. Simply attach it to the tap and let flowing water pass through it, or let it swirl around in the bath water. Or use the hemp directly, as a skin exfoliant.
