Cheese and Onion Biscuits
Heart-shaped, these biscuits were inspired by Carol Ann Duffy's iconic poem 'Valentine' in which the speaker offers his/her lover 'an onion' as a more appropriate Valentine's Day gift. While it takes the lover a lot of convincing to accept this onion, you'll have no problem shifting these biscuits - the delicious smell alone will have people enquiring in the kitchen before the biscuits are even out of the oven.

Ingredients
- 150g self-raising flour (and extra for dusting)
- 100g salted butter at room temperature
- 60g grated parmesan (and more to sprinkle on top if you want)
- 10g onion powder (this can be purchased in the herbs and spices aisle)
- 10g poppy seeds
- A splash of whole milk
Equipment
- Heart cutter
- Rolling pin
- Baking trays lined with parchment
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C fan. In a large bowl, rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
2. Add the parmesan, onion powder and poppy seeds.
3. Add a splash of milk and bring together into a firm dough; add more milk if needed, but do this gradually to avoid an over-wet dough.
4. Roll out to 5mm thick and cut shapes. Sprinkle more cheese on top if desired. Place on the trays and then bake for about 10 minutes until golden brown.
